Not related to this post: I am currently in contract negotiations with the Eggs for their reappearance on the blog for 2013. Keep your fingers crossed.
————————–
Be forewarned, I might cuss a lot here and that is highly abnormal. I am seeing red.
Part of the reason my politics changed is that a certain visible and significant subset of conservatives are assholes. They spew hate against non-Whites and non-Christians, visibly throw support to the Republican party (which gladly takes the votes) and then wonder why people don’t want to associate with Republicans or conservatism.
When the Drudge Report links to an article that can be commented on, holy shit. The conservative Drudges dump all over the comments section (All the comments are from the article Study Shows Soaring STD Rates In Many Areas Of New York City)
What’s telling is not that there might be some trolls, BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE UPVOTED OUTRIGHT HATE.
A sane, moral readership would have downvoted the following comment to hell:
Seriously? How many of those same people go to church and claim Jesus as their savior? But then you listen to their words and find out they are some of the worst pieces of shit on the planet.
At the very least, these people seem very interested in feeling morally and culturally superior. There’s good ol’ American values for you.
This is worth reading, in large part because the two authors in question are not affiliated with Democrats or Liberalism or Progressivism or whatever:

One thing I really detest in leadership is extreme “message control,” which seems to be greatly valued by current Republican influences (notably Rove, eg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Iraq_Group).
In recent back-and-forth about the deficit, it’s been common for Democrats to say “You didn’t seem concerned about ‘big spending’ when Bush was President,” and the Republican rebuttal is “There was lots of concern expressed about it behind closed doors.”
Dammit, it’s a democracy. Why are those discussions happening behind closed doors? If you’d include the public in your debate, then I’d know you are reasoning humans working to consider all angles. Instead you present me with zombie-bots reading the agreed-upon messaging that rolled off the fax from headquarters this morning.
(For the record I’m “unenrolled” in either party and have voted Republican twice in the last 5 presidential elections. So my POV is that I very much look forward to having viable conservative candidates.)
Those Eggs should not be in this country. They only give us salmonella. We should eat every one of them. 🙂
first… welcome back!!
second… wow. i was warned but i haven’t seen you this upset since I told you Janet Reno wore the Natasha dress better than you.
This is a good example of why *the church* lost me… not necessarily being conservative, but actively participating in a specific faith. The connection between faith in a deity and being a good person became tenuous, then disappeared because of behavior like this.
A little disturbing, a lot sad. and these are the folks who are also for abstinence only sex ed.
on a lighter note, i’m a creepy barbarian! yay! =D
@Derek: Viable conservatives would be nice.
The Huff Post article put it very nicely. Republican vs Democrat is no longer an struggle between equally (dis)honest entities.
Maybe it’s not quite at the scientific value of astronomy vs astrology…but it’s getting there. (No apologies to the 20-25% of Americans who actually take astrology seriously…you guys are being had.)
@Q: Don’t worry…they only give you salmonella if you eat them raw!
@Annie: Truth. If you gave me the attributes/personalities/actions of people that I’ve met and said “figure out which people are of what faith/non-faith”, it would be impossible.
Welcome back, indeed. I’ll note that I can go to “left-wing” sites and find the same sort of group-think reinforcement, complete with profanity and obscenity. And it’s especially the things they write about conservative women, Hispanics and blacks that are the nastiest, most vile and “eliminationist.”
These people, both wings, are neither “liberal” or “conservative.” Liberals and conservatives don’t write stuff like this. It is cretins getting off behind a pseudonym.
On a lighter note–bring back the Eggs, puhleeeze. I need a motivational speech from The Mascot.
Robert, there is plenty of scum and villainy from liberals as well. And these people don’t realize what hypocrites that makes them. A black person can’t be a Republican without called an Uncle Tom…it’s stupid, vile, and doesn’t help anything.
But it seems, from my perusal of left- and right-wing sites, that this kind of thing is more prevalent on the right. Maybe the fact that I was conservative for so long (and expected more from people on “my side”) changes the perception.
And the Eggs are coming back this year! I just posted the contract with Satan that’s forcing us to do so.
Word.
