Espn.com has a headline “No. 4 Wake Forest upsets No. 3 UNC”. Ugh. When teams are ranked #3 and #4 (out of 119 or so), that means they’re considered approximately of equal strength. It’s not surprising or improbable when #4 beats #3; why is ESPN calling it an upset?

During the third quarter of yesterday’s Steelers-Chargers game, the Chargers had the ball for exactly one play. The first 8 minutes, the Steelers drove for a touchdown. The Chargers then threw an interception on their single offensive play, after which the Steelers drove down the field again, holding the ball into the fourth quarter.

I’m surprised the Eagles beat the Giants by 11. Can’t say I’m displeased.

: BOOORRRING!

: OK, fine! I have to fill in something while you finish your Mascot saves Christmas thing. Which you should have finished up by last week.

: Great literature takes time, even for a genius like me. You can’t rush it.

I am SOOO happy the Giants lost. And I don’t like SD all that much because Tomlinson is a pussy. Next week’s AFC game should be great. NFC? Not so much. I really hope the Eagles win as Phoenix sort of blows and will get destroyed by any AFC team.

Hmm, where did that ‘1.’ come from. I don’t remember typing it.

    I am going insane.

Oh, is it an automatic numbering system for the comments?

I predict this post has a ‘3.’ in front of it. Am I brilliant or what?

Well I think that it sucks that the Giants lost. I now have to root for the Cardinals as they are the hometown team. Although my wife has threatened to make me sleep on the couch if I do such a thing, she’s a Seahawks fan.

Yup, things get pretty interesting in our house sometimes. When I really want to get her mad, I just remind her that my hometown still has a baketball team 😀 Albeit not a good one.

“Upsets” is nothing – I get irate about their constant misuse of “stuns”. They overdramatize everything to get more clicks. I’m drafting a list of responsible sports headline writing rules. Nobody can use “stuns” in regards to winning a conference game at home, unless the winner was previously winless.

BDK – you’re insane AND brilliant.

Mascot: It took Ayn Rand like 11 years to finish Atlas Shrugs and it was just words, it didn’t even have pictures. So yeah, tell Donnie “Ars longa, vita brevis, occasio praeceps, experimentum periculosum, iudicium difficile.”

BDK: I think more DHA may be in order. Or was it DHEA? But definitely not DMT.

Derek: You are so right, as is Donnie with the “upset” thing. In tournament chess, winning against someone 200 points higher is reasonably an upset, and 400 is probably a stun.

In my defense, when I wrote the comments, the numerals appeared contiguous with my text, not above it with a linebreak, so it did appear I wrote them.

    Wang, the Cardinals? Ugh.

Patriots opponents in 2009: be very afraid.

    @BDK: You ARE brilliant.

The Eagles should win, but when the “bad” Eagles show up, they are really bad.

I believe Tom Brady is a very good QB, but won’t give quite the boost that most people think. Still an excellent 12-win team, but they probably won’t be juggernaut good again.

@wang: lolwut. Seahawks/Cardinals rivalry? That’s almost like requiring Abstract Algebra for an English degree. Not exactly sure why it would make any sense.

@Derek: And this is why they won’t hire you to boost their ratings. What annoys you brings in the mindless masses.

@Robert: I will get back to you after consulting the neighborhood Latin-English dictionary.

re: Patriots – I’m not making any bets but I think the idea is you don’t just get Brady back, you get Maroney, Adalius Thomas, etc. (Plus they resume the extracurricular videotaping.)

Oh, they’re taping again? We could be looking at another 18-1…losing in the Super Bowl to some marginal team like Redskins…

Donnie, I didn’t mean to send you to some dictionary, this is a kind of stock quote from Hip Hopocrates or one of those dudes, meaning roughly ‘art is long (takes a long time), life is short, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult’.

You know, something that totally applies to the Mascot’s monumental task at hand.

Yes, I can do nothing but concur.

Your use of Latin provides a level of sophistication that is sorely needed here, so feel free to continue doing so.
