What makes you a nerd?

It’s no secret that I and most of my friends are nerds of some sort. Granted, it seems arbitrary what forms of entertainment are considered nerdy or not. As Americans, I guess non-nerds are supposed to like reality TV, football (American) and summer movie blockbusters. (Video games are OK as long as they’re first-person shooters.)

Here are a few things that assure my nerd credentials:

1. Being able to name 20 different chess openings.
2. Preferring to watch professional Starcraft to professional sports.
3. The ability to mathematically demonstrate why the World Series is not a good way to determine who the best team in the league is.

So tell me…what makes you a nerd?

A few of my nerd credentials:

    1. Love to study theology
    2. Enjoy following politics
    3. Love to read books and blogs that can teach me something I am interested in.
    4. Regularly watch the History Channel (before my cable company moved it to a more expensive tier) and the Discovery Channel

My daughters could probably write a book detailing my nerd credentials.

    1. The ability to give the etymology of about 90% of English words without the use of a reference.

    2. A love of languages, and not always “useful” ones like Spanish, Chinese, etc.

    3. A deep deep love of RPGs in pretty much any platform (tabletop, computer, console, etc). I’ve played so many. (This does not count card games like M:tG though.) This ties into my equally deep deep love of fantasy literature.

    4. The vast majority of my book collection is classics, fantasy literature, sci-fi, poetry, or non-fiction books about math and science.

    5. I’m in love with you. That’s pretty serious credentials, right there. 😉

      1. I always thought an RPG was a Rocket Propelled Grenade.

      2. I am in love with him too, but in a manly, buddy movie kind of way.

      3. Etymology, oh YEAH I felt a thrill run up my leg when I read that word…there’s my gold-plated nerd cred, right there!

@Robert: Thankfully, the Mascot does no accounting. He sucks at math.

@Q: I’ve been depressed ever since you moved to Australia.

I write long emails about my expolits in games. Currently I’m in correspondence with Apt 35 over Dungeons of Dredmore, great game. Only $5 on Steam. I bought it on sale at a 10% discount 😛

I love Donnie. That’s enough for the nerd credential 🙂

    I read your blog…
I can name 40 different openings.
    I like following politics.
I know what’s wrong with the mythology of most comic book based movies.
    I like the History Channel.
I think Donnie and Katrushka are the coolest couple on earth (next to Mrs. Wang and I of course)

Commenting on this blog automatically makes you a nerd. Non-nerds don’t have anything to do with this blog, unless they’re a TROLL! 🙂

oh mylanta. i’m late to this party.

um i think my only nerd creds are buck teeth and thick glasses. i forfeited the “asian” nerd cred when i flunked calculus in high school and dated a foreign exchange student.

i love how geekdom is sexy now, though. haha!

You do not have buck teeth.

I also dated a foreign exchange student, but it didn’t make me less nerdy, it just gave me a deep appreciation for German males.

Can’t help you with the calculus, my high school didn’t offer it so I took it in college 🙂

@Tom: Most people don’t think “theology” in the realms of nerddom, but I’ve got to agree that it can count!

I feel you about the History Channel. While I still get that, they took away NatGeo. *sadface*

    @Derek: Har, har.

@Katrushka: Frankly, you missed out by not getting into M:tG. I think I still have some cards somewhere.

@Q: What? How come I’m not getting the Dungeons of Dredmore emails. I feel so unloved!

@wang: Showing me up by doubling the number of openings you can name…man, how am I ever going to get those chess groupies now?

@Mascot: Agree with Q. And you’re hiding something…spit it out…we all know it.

@Annie: Nerddom is disappointed you usually wear contacts.
