Blizzard announced the Diablo 3 beta today. Exciting, but not the biggest deal in the world. But take a note of this:
This is from the Auction House. You can sell items for either in-game money or actual U.S. dollars.
In World of Warcraft, I made a crap-ton of (fake) money via the Auction House system by taking advantage of people who weren’t so good at knowing the real value of stuff (or were willing to sacrifice more money for quick money).
While I may end up making a little bit of spending money, there are a few reasons why I won’t expect to turn much of a profit:
-
Professionals will surely abound. It won’t be like dealing with mostly amateurs on a WoW server.
-
It could be more difficult to gauge the fair market value. In WoW, almost items were like Copper Ore. A piece of ore is always a piece of ore, and it was fairly easy to determine the market value.
In Diablo 3, most equipment has randomly generated statistics. How valuable is this Double Axe with increased attack speed and lifesteal versus this other Double Axe with stat bonuses and increased damage? It can be more subjective. Buy and repost will be tougher.
-
If most people are like me, they will never bother spending real money on a fake weapon or ring.
-
I play games for FUN first. An awesome item will only be sold if I or a friend has no use for it!
It’s a game made for hoarders like me. Ohhhh my.
Let’s make a corporation and attempt to monopolize the market. With you, me and Katruska we’ll be swimming in ben franklins 🙂 I’m more excited about the prospects of playing with u guys. I wanna be the chunky guy who can take the hits.
@Katrushka: I expect to see you on A&E soon. You’ll be famous!
@Q: Too bad Chinese prisoners forced to farm for items 12 hours a day will have an advantage!
I plan on trying a Monk out first.
I shall be a witch doctor. So we’ll have a fat man, a thin man, and an angry man who creates swarms of insects. I like it.
I’m guessing the fat man is the demon hunter, right? Sounds like he can take a beating up close :p
@Katrushka: I went to the Witch Doctor; he told me what to do…
@Q: I thought the Demon Hunter was an agile ranged guy. But maybe he’s tough too.
I was only j/k. The Demon Hunter looked highly ranged from the trailer. He’d prolly die in melee. The male model looked like Jaffar. It’s actually appropriate as i can see Jaffar being that sneaky and underhanded.
WHERE IS MY VIZIER?
It would be pretty cool to be able to play as the Scoundrel.
Scoundrel? I don’t think there’s a Scoundrel class, except in Star Wars.
